Abstract
| - We are pleased to present to the readers of the American Journal of Hypertension the proceedings of an international symposium on ''Advances in Pathophysiology and Management of Hypertension" held in Bari, Italy, on April 10-11,1987, and organized by the Institute of Clinica Medica I of the University of Bari under the direction of Prof. Ottavio Albano. This symposium is the first of the "Bari Meetings on Hypertension" that will be held biannually in Bari, Italy. The program was designed to review some of the most recent discoveries and insights gained about the pathophysiology and management of hypertension. The pathophysiological aspects reviewed in this issue relate to the role of kidney, prostaglandins, renal nerves, calcium, parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and atrial natriuretic factor in the genesis and/or maintenance of hypertension. Moreover, the relationship between hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy and the effect of antihypertensive agents on left ventricular hypertrophy have been reviewed. The final part of this symposium deals with the pharmacological and nonpharmacological management of hypertension. We hope that these reviews will bring the reader up-to-date on several areas of interest in the field of hypertension
