Abstract
  • NASA's STEREO mission uses twin spacecraft observing the Sun and solar neighbourhood from increasingly distant viewpoints to give a stereo view of the solar chromosphere and corona, including coronal mass ejections. UK researchers have provided the Heliospheric Imagers on each spacecraft, comprising sensitive wide-field cameras able to track coronal mass ejections right out to Earth's orbit. Here we describe the instruments, datahandling procedures and results obtained so far. We finish with a discussion of the potential of these instruments for a wide range of astronomical observations during the two-and-a-half-year mission.
