Abstract
  • This solubility study of estriol (E3) by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) is part of our program for studying the basic chemistry of the steroid hormones, especially that of the estrogens. GLC is used to quantitate E3 as the free steroid and also to evaluate how protonic and aprotic solvents affect the dissolved molecule. This data is of particular significance in all phases of estrogen analysis and in evaluating modern theories of solution. Solubility was approached from supersaturation equilibrium at 0°, 15°, 25°, 30°, and 40°C ±0.01°, in 13 organic solvents, depending upon individual freezing and boiling points. Triplicate determinations, each of a different ratio of estriol and pregnantriol (the internal standard) were measured for each solvent at each temperature. This article contains more of what is known about the solubility of E3 (through our work) than has previously been found in the literature.
