The evaluation of screening procedures for asymptomatic individuals has been based upon generally accepted criteria. All of these standard criteria, however, may not be appropriate for evaluating screening in the elderly due to the prevalence of symptoms and chronic problems in this age group and due to the importance of tertiary prevention in achieving the relevant health goals for the elderly. Evaluation criteria that reflect the goals of screening elderly individuals are proposed. The application of these new criteria is illustrated by reviewing a program designed for the “young” elderly 65 to 70 years of age.
