Abstract
  • The termination of a pregnancy, which was conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), has been questioned. Fetal anomaly is the usual indication for termination of IVF pregnancies, although there are cases where normal pregnancies were voluntarily terminated. This group has not been studied and national register statistics are not always sufficiently substratified to isolate them. The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority, other regulatory bodies, voluntary reporting agencies and accredited assisted conception units should include more detailed information on pregnancy termination in their data set, with particular attention to the indications for termination. It would be helpful to know, for example, the age distribution of the women and whether own or donor gametes were used. Regulatory bodies should also consider providing guidelines for the counseling and further management of women or couples who request termination of pregnancy, especially normal pregnancy. If there is no fetal anomaly, considering the child for adoption by another infertile couple could be an acceptable alternative to termination.
