Abstract
| - Morphological evaluation of the effects of 1-(2-Tetrahydrofuryl)-5-Fluorouracil (FT) was made. FT was given orally or rectally in 54 patients with colorectal cancer, for a period between diagnosis and surgery. The disappearance of the rand wall and reduction of the size of the cancerous ulcer with converging folds were the characteristic macroscopic features which suggested the effects of FT on the primary colorectal cancer lesions. A five stage classification of the estimated amount of remaining viable cancer cells was employed for histological evaluation. As a whole, the response rate of FT to colorectal cancer was 20.4%. But it was observed that the response rate was proportional to the increase of the total dose of FT given. And among eight cases which were given FT 30.1 g or more in a cumulative dose, four showed definite effects, i.e., viable cancer cells remained in less than one-third of the area of the lesion. Toxic effects of FT were mild and could be well tolerated by most of the patients. From the above results, the usefulness of FT as an adjuvant to curative surgery was suggested.
