Abstract
  • The great expansion of the textile industry in England at the end of the eighteenth century was associated with numerous medical and social problems. Dr Thomas Percival of Manchester became personally involved in these problems through his studies on population structure and his attempts to eliminate typhus in the Lancashire mills. His views and plans greatly influenced Robert Peel who introduced the first legislation designed to combat the abuses and improve the health and welfare of factory employees.
