Abstract
  • Various procedures have been proposed for identifying the “blocs” in legislative bodies, or the “dimensions” or “variables along which the members of such bodies may be ordered, through the analysis of roll call votes. Refinement of such analysis leads to “dimensions” that may correspond either to similarity in legislators' public attitudes, or to actual social groupings in the legislature. To distinguish these two types of “dimensions” is one of the important tasks of roll call analysis.
