Abstract
  • This article combines census and survey data to assess the effects of community characteristics, black concentration and urbanism, on the decision processes of southern white voters. Examining voting for Wallace in the 1968 election, the effects of black concentration on voting, attitudes, issue salience, and perceptions of candidates are found to be generally greater in rural than in urban areas.
