Abstract	As unlikely as it may seem, family researchers and clinicians both have poorly understood the sibling relationship. Here the author describes the strong, ambivalent bonds between siblings and reports on a study of the effects that social comparison exerts on brothers—effects that help to shape the individual's identity, adult roles, and peer relations.
