Abstract
| - To determine the placement outcomes of prenatally drug-exposed children two years after they had been placed in foster care, the authors analyzed data on 1,035 infants. These infants had been placed under Los Angeles Juvenile Court custody or under the supervision of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) before their mothers were discharged from the hospital. Placement outcomes for these children were compared with the outcomes of 203 non-prenatally drug-exposed children who also had been placed under court custody or DCFS supervision before hospital discharge. Two-thirds of the drug-exposed and more than half of the non-drug-exposed children were still in care at two years. Factors contributing to continued foster care placement are identified, and implications for the child welfare system are presented.
