Abstract
| - Summary. 1. Twenty-six cases of myositis and muscle abscess occurring in the Western Solomons have been investigated. 2. Two classes of patients have been examined. (a) Local natives; (b) Indentured labourers. It is contended that the former are not infected with Filaria bancrofti, and that the latter are. 3. Both groups are equally liable to tropical myositis and muscle abscess. 4. Tropical myositis is mainly a disease of the male sex, and although it occurs at all ages, most cases occur in early and middle adult life. 5. Lesions may or may not suppurate, the number of each type being about equal. 6. It has been shown that the disease varies greatly in severity; illustrative cases are quoted. 7. Pulmonary complications occur in at least 23 per cent. of cases. 8. The relationship of the disease to filariasis has been discussed, and the opinion expressed that it is not due to infection with F. bancrofti. 9. Mortality rates and treatment have been briefly described.
