Abstract
| - Abstract. The Bitis gabonica (Gaboon viper) is described and contrasted with the Bitis arietans (puff adder) and the Bitis nasicornis. Emphasis is laid on the fact that no domestic or foreign serum hitherto tested has exerted more than a negligible neutralizing action on B. gabonica venom. B. gabonica venom is characterized by a toxic fraction not present in B. arietans venom; rabbits immunized with anavenom derived from the former show a high resistance to B. arietans venom, whilst injections of B. arietans anavenom afford no protection against B. gabonica venom. B. gabonica venom may be rendered atoxic by means of formalin; the resulting anavenom is antigenic and gives rise in the horse to a specific antivenene of therapeutic value. The natural serum may be concentrated and refined by means of sodium sulphate, the neutralizing power being increased more than threefold.
