Abstract
| - Abstract. After a haemoglobin survey of two Gambian villages, 112 women were studied further, by using a small battery of tests in which a comparison was made of the 55 women with haemoglobin below 9·5 g. per 100 ml. and the 57 less anaemic women. A controlled trial was carried out of 3 months' Imferon treatment given either at once or delayed for 3 months. Within the same controlled trial a comparison was made of the total dose of Imferon given as 3 injections at monthly intervals, or as 12 injections at weekly intervals. A prevalent iron deficiency was found which was the major cause of anaemia. It was associated with pregnancy and menorrhagia but not with hookworm infection. The results among women have been contrasted with those published earlier on men in the same villages. The differences include the part played by hookworm infection and by splenomegaly. The management of the common iron deficiency anaemia in adults in rural Gambia is discussed in the light of these findings.
