Abstract	Diabetes mellitus occurs in all parts of the world, but with striking differences in prevalence and mode of presentation. This article considers the epidemiology of diabetes world-wide and specifically the pattern of diabetes in the tropics which appears to differ from that seen in Europe and the USA. Detailed epidemiological studies will help both in understanding diabetes pathogenesis and in rational management of this very important and common disease.
