Abstract. Beyond literary definitions of auto-biography and the definitions implied in them, this article looks at what talking about oneself means in different social worlds. The tendency to talk about oneself and the ways of doing it depend on the person’s social position and available resources. Starting from a survey of amateur writing, one can show that the adopted literary genre (memoirs, diary, autobiographical novel, etc.) refers to socially differentiated representations of the self, of privacy, of uniqueness and of the person. Résumé. Au-delà des définitions littéraires de l’autobiographie et des définitions implicites qu’elles sous-tendent, il s’agit ici d’enquêter sur ce que parler de soi veut dire dans des univers sociaux différents. Les dispositions à parler de soi et les manières de le faire dépendent des positions sociales occupées et des ressources détenues. À partir d’une enquête sur l’écriture amateur, on peut montrer que le genre littéraire adopté (mémoires, journal intime, roman autobiographique...) renvoie aux représentations socialement différenciées, du moi, de l’intimité, de la singularité et de la personne.
