Modesty and its ambiguities, from Antiquity to modern times. Modesty, or the tendency to refrain from showing, observing or making a point of certain parts of the body, especially those of a sexual nature, has been variously judged, criticised and analysed over the ages. This article describes some of the changing perceptions of “modesty”, with its underlying ambiguities, since Antiquity.
