La gratuité du don inspire une méfiance sous l’influence idéologique de la société marchande. Or, il existe au contraire une pulsion originaire de « se donner », de sorte que le don est, dès le début de la vie, l’occasion d’un refoulement. Cette pulsion de se donner est à la source de la tentation suicidaire, ou de l’agressivité à l’égard du semblable, et une coutume connue, le potlatch, montre bien le destin civilisé de cette corrélation entre le don, la destruction, l’agressivité et la fondation du lien social. On montrera que dans le paradigme de Marcel Mauss : « donner - recevoir - obligation de rendre », l’obligation porte davantage sur « donner » que sur « rendre ». Is there an Impulse to Give ? A Remark on the Place of obligation in Mauss’ Paradigm. The gratuitousness of gift inspires a distrust under the ideological influence of the trade society. Meanwhile, there is on the contrary an original drive “to give oneself, ” so that the gift is, from the beginning of the life, the occasion of a repression. This drive to give oneself is at the source of the suicidal temptation, or of the aggressiveness towards the fellow man, and a known custom, the potlatch, shows well the civilized fate of this correlation between the gift, the destruction, the aggressiveness and the social link’s foundation. We will show that in Marcel Mauss’s paradigm : “to give - to receive - obligation to give back, ” the obligation concerns more “to give” than “to give back.”
