Jacob N. Israelachvili received his PhD degree in physics from Cambridge University, England, in 1972. After two years as a European Molecular Biology Organization research fellow at the University of Stockholm, he went to the Australian National University. In 1986, he joined the faculty of the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he holds joint appointments as a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Materials Department, and the Biomolecular Science and Engineering Program. He was the associate director of the Materials Research Laboratory at UCSB from 1993 to 2003. Israelachvili was elected a member of the Australian Academy of Science (1982), a fellow of the Royal Society of London (1988), a foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (1996), a fellow of the American Physical Society (2004), and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (2004). He is the author of the textbook Intermolecular and Surface Forces (Academic Press, second edition, 1991).
