Abstract
| - Thin films of 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylcyclopentadienyl radical (Cp5φ•; φ = C6H5) were obtainedupon decomposition of decaphenylplumbocene [PbCp5φ2] in vacuo. Formation of the radicalspecies was confirmed by EPR as well as electron absorption and emission spectroscopy.Cp5φ• decomposes slowly in solution, which is accelerated by aerobic exposure. Methods ofprotecting the thin films of Cp5φ• from aerobic decomposition were developed and used toprotect the films during handling and microscopic analysis. We demonstrate that Cp5φ• formsamorphous thin films upon deposition, whereas thin films of the corresponding protonatedcompound, 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylcyclopentadi-2,4-ene (Cp5φΗ), show both crystalline andamorphous structures.
